Thiruvananthapuram Mayor V. V. Rajesh has demanded a comprehensive investigation into the partial collapse of a school building at Attakulangara Central High School, which occurred on the school reopening day. The roof of the building, which housed the Samagra Shiksha Kerala (SSK) office, collapsed on Monday evening around 5:30 PM. Fortunately, a major tragedy was averted as students and staff had already left the premises, and no injuries were reported.
The incident has triggered a political dispute regarding the building’s safety and fitness. Mayor Rajesh pointed out that the building was renovated recently at a high cost, yet the renovation was superficial—merely adding ceilings and paint without replacing the decayed wooden beams. He revealed that the city corporation had not issued a fitness certificate for the structure and announced that he would formally write a letter seeking a detailed inquiry into the unscientific construction and fund utilization.
In response to the incident, the Education Department has directed the District Education Officer to conduct an inquiry. While the Mayor has blamed the state government and former Education Minister V. Sivankutty for the lapses, Sivankutty countered by alleging negligence on the part of the municipal corporation. Meanwhile, parents and local residents have raised concerns over the safety of school buildings across the state, urging authorities to take immediate action.
