The United Arab Emirates is accelerating its efforts to nationalize its healthcare sector by introducing attractive benefits to recruit more citizens into nursing, while simultaneously considering regulations to limit the number of foreign nursing and midwifery professionals. Over the last two years, 1,897 UAE nationals have been recruited into the nursing workforce, currently representing 2.8% of the country’s total nursing staff.
To achieve these nationalization goals, the Ministry is actively collaborating with ‘Nafis’—the federal government program for local talent development—alongside the Nafis Academy, healthcare institutions, and the Emirates Nursing Association. Currently, around 2,500 Emirati students are pursuing nursing degrees, with a notable increase in male enrollment. Additionally, the government is planning to introduce standardized national licensing criteria and staff-to-patient ratios to regulate the recruitment of foreign healthcare professionals.
