UDF Government Delivers on Election Guarantees in First Cabinet Meeting

VD Satheesan-led UDF government held its first cabinet meeting after the swearing-in ceremony and delivered on two of the five election guarantees promised during the campaign.

The first decision grants free travel for women on KSRTC buses starting June 15. Detailed guidelines will be announced in the coming days.

The second major decision is the formation of a dedicated department for senior citizens — a first-of-its-kind initiative in India. The government plans to study successful models like Japan’s elderly care system over the next two months before rolling out comprehensive programs.

Addressing the media after the cabinet meeting, Chief Minister VD Satheesan said that keeping promises is the foundation of a civilized society and that the government is committed to fulfilling all five guarantees.

The cabinet also announced a ₹3000 increase in retirement benefits for Anganwadi workers and helpers, along with a ₹1000 honorarium hike for cooks, pre-primary teachers, and ayahs across the state.

A special assembly session has been convened for May 21 for MLA oath-taking, May 22 for Speaker election, and May 29 for the Governor’s address. Senior MLA and former minister G Sudhakaran has been appointed Pro-tem Speaker.

Senior Advocate Jayaju Babu has been appointed as the new Advocate General of Kerala, replacing K Gopalakrishna Kurup who resigned. Senior Advocate T Asaf Ali has been appointed Director General of Prosecution.

The cabinet also approved the formation of a Special Investigation Team to re-investigate the 2023 Alappuzha incident where two protesters were allegedly attacked by the then Chief Minister’s gunmen, following a court order for re-investigation.

A white paper on Kerala’s financial situation will be published soon, to be prepared by a team of financial experts.
