The UK Home Office has sparked widespread panic among migrant care workers, including many from Kerala, by issuing immediate departure notices to their legally residing dependents. Despite the parents having valid visas to remain and work in the UK, several families have received official letters ordering their young children—some as young as five—and pregnant spouses to leave the country.
According to reports, including an investigation by The Guardian, these notices have been served to families who arrived in the UK legally before the visa rules were tightened. Many of these children are already enrolled in British schools, and their partners are employed in various sectors. Affected families express deep distress, noting they paid substantial visa fees, pay taxes, and contribute to the British economy without claiming public benefits.
The UK government had previously banned care workers from bringing dependents starting March 2024, followed by a complete ban on recruiting care workers from abroad in July. However, legal experts point out that the recent wave of deportation notices targets dependents who arrived legally prior to these bans, leaving thousands of expatriate families in a state of severe emotional and financial uncertainty.
