Vadakara Kafir Screenshot Case: Government Orders Re-investigation

The government has ordered a fresh probe into the controversial “Kafir” screenshot case, which triggered intense political and communal debates in Vadakara during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. A special seven-member investigation team, led by Kozhikode Rural DYSP Manoharan T and coordinated by the Kannur DIG, has been constituted to identify the actual creator and conspirators behind the fake screenshot.

The controversy erupted on the eve of the election during a fierce contest between LDF’s KK Shailaja and UDF’s Shafi Parambil. Initially, Left-aligned platforms accused MSF leader PK Muhammad Kasim of creating the post, leading to a police case. However, Kasim approached the High Court claiming innocence, and subsequent police reports revealed that the screenshot was widely circulated on Left-leaning social media pages like ‘Porali Shaji’ and ‘Red Battalion’, eventually tracing back to a DYFI leader. Despite this, the previous probe was closed without identifying the original source.

The decision for a re-investigation comes after Kuttiadi MLA Parakkal Abdulla submitted a formal complaint. The newly formed team will focus on retrieving data from Meta and conducting forensic examinations of suspected mobile phones to trace the origin of the screenshot and uncover if there was any high-level conspiracy involved.
