Kerala Chief Minister VD Satheesan has flown to Delhi for his first visit since assuming office. The trip marks a significant moment in Kerala’s political landscape, as the new CM is set to hold crucial discussions with the Congress high command regarding a complete overhaul of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC).
Satheesan’s primary agenda includes thanking Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, and Priyanka Gandhi for backing him as the chief ministerial candidate. More importantly, he intends to convey his views on who should lead the KPCC as its next president.
The CM is keen to avoid a repeat of the Oommen Chandy-VM Sudheeran era, where the government and the party organization were at odds, leading to administrative stagnation. Satheesan wants a KPCC president he can work with in complete coordination, ensuring a smooth relationship between the government and the party machinery.
The Congress high command has already decided on a comprehensive reorganization of the KPCC. Satheesan’s Delhi discussions are expected to focus heavily on leadership changes within the state party unit.
This trip stands in stark contrast to Satheesan’s earlier visits to Delhi, which were marked by intense suspense over the chief ministerial candidate. During that period, a significant section of MLAs were reportedly backing KC Venugopal for the top post. Despite the challenges, the high command ultimately chose Satheesan, and he has carried himself with confidence ever since.
No official government meetings or programs are scheduled for this visit. Kerala House staff have prepared a warm reception for the CM, who is described as approaching his first Delhi trip in a relaxed and confident manner.
The discussions in Delhi are expected to set the stage for major changes in Kerala Congress politics and the party’s state apparatus.
