Vijay’s TVK Reportedly Plans to Side Step Congress in Tamil Nadu Politics

Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), is reportedly making strategic moves to distance itself from the Indian National Congress in Tamil Nadu. Despite the Congress party’s attempts to secure a foothold under the superstar’s popularity after leaving its long-term ally DMK, recent reports suggest that TVK views the national party as a political liability that could impact its clean image.

According to reports from national media outlets, including Aaj Tak and The News Minute’s podcast, TVK is aiming to secure a majority of 118 seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly on its own. To demonstrate its independent strength, TVK has inducted three sitting AIADMK MLAs, triggering upcoming by-elections in Madurantakam, Dharapuram, and Perundurai, where Vijay’s party plans to contest alone without relying on alliance partners like the Congress.

Furthermore, TVK is building an independent support base through populist measures like agricultural loan waivers and nominating clean-image former IAS officer U. Sagayam to the Rajya Sabha. Vijay’s recent meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi to discuss state issues also indicates a shift toward a softer stance with the central government, further rendering the Congress party politically redundant in TVK’s future calculations.
