A major corruption scandal has emerged from Vizhinjam, Thiruvananthapuram, where government-built flats worth Rs 91 crore are crumbling just four years after construction. The flats, built under the Rajiv Awas Yojana scheme for fishing communities, show severe structural defects with exposed rusted reinforcement bars, crumbling concrete, and no proper cement content.
Residents of over 300 families live in constant fear of death. Concrete slabs frequently fall from ceilings — one woman recently required stitches after a piece of concrete struck her head. Children play in areas where rusted iron rods hang dangerously overhead. During rain, water leaks through the poorly constructed roof, forcing families to sleep outside.
Despite a five-year maintenance warranty, the buildings began deteriorating within three years. Locals report that complaints to the corporation go unanswered, though the Mayor has now visited twice and assured action. The concrete samples show virtually no cement content, raising serious questions about where the allocated funds went.
