VP Suhara Criticizes Samastha Over Nilavilakku Controversy Involving Fathima Tahliya

VP Suhara, the president of the progressive women’s organization Nisa, has strongly criticized the religious body Samastha for its statement declaring the lighting of traditional lamps (nilavilakku) as un-Islamic. The controversy erupted after political leader Fathima Tahliya lit a traditional lamp during a public event, prompting Samastha to issue a formal objection.

Speaking on the issue, Suhara pointed out that in earlier times, before the advent of electricity or kerosene, people routinely read the Quran under the light of traditional brass lamps. She noted that during her research visits to various historical maqbaras (mausoleums), she personally witnessed these lamps being preserved. She argued that light represents knowledge and clarity, and labeling a lamp as un-Islamic simply because it is also used in Hindu traditions is regressive.

Suhara expressed concern that such controversies are aimed at restricting the freedom of Muslim women and pulling the community back to the sixth century. She lauded Fathima Tahliya as an educated and capable leader, stating that the rise of Muslim women into leadership roles should be celebrated rather than suppressed by intolerant dictates.
