Why K. Annamalai Left BJP and His Next Political Move in Tamil Nadu

Former Tamil Nadu BJP State President and ex-IPS officer K. Annamalai has officially resigned from the party, sparking intense discussion across the Indian political landscape. His departure, which followed detailed discussions with the BJP national leadership in Delhi, is being viewed not as a rebellion, but as a calculated step to establish a new regional political alternative in Tamil Nadu.

Annamalai, who left a distinguished IPS career in 2019 to enter public service, quickly rose to become the youngest BJP State President in Tamil Nadu in 2021. During his tenure, his “En Mann En Makkal” padayatra and uncompromising stance against corruption significantly boosted the BJP’s visibility in the state. However, his strong opposition to the party’s alliance with the AIADMK, which ultimately proved unsuccessful in the elections, created friction with traditional local leaders and influenced his decision to chart an independent path.

Following his resignation, Annamalai announced the launch of a volunteer registration website, “veeleader.org,” which garnered lakhs of registrations within 24 hours. He has also initiated the APJ Abdul Kalam Center for Politics in Coimbatore to train youth and announced plans to form a new political movement called “Makkal Iyakkam” to contest the upcoming assembly elections. Analysts suggest this strategy could position him as a major regional force alongside Vijay’s TVK, potentially reshaping Tamil Nadu’s political dynamics in the future.
