Speculation is rife in Tamil Nadu politics over whether former BJP state president K. Annamalai will quit the party to launch a new political outfit. Amidst strong rumors of his exit and reports of initial discussions with actor Rajinikanth, Annamalai has arrived in New Delhi to hold crucial discussions with the BJP’s central leadership, signaling that a final decision has not yet been reached.
Annamalai, who resigned from his IPS career in 2019 to join the BJP, significantly boosted the party’s presence in Tamil Nadu after becoming the state president in 2022. However, friction arose after the Lok Sabha elections when Union Home Minister Amit Shah overruled Annamalai’s strategy of contesting alone without the AIADMK. Consequently, Annamalai was removed from his state presidency under the pretext of being elevated to a national role, but promised positions—such as BJP National President, General Secretary, or a Rajya Sabha seat with a Union Cabinet post—have faced endless delays.
The central leadership is now actively trying to pacify the disgruntled leader to prevent his exit, especially as posters hailing him have emerged across Tamil Nadu. While the BJP’s previous decision to sideline him and forge an alliance resulted in a severe electoral setback, the party leadership is still hesitant to openly admit its mistake. Observers note that Annamalai’s willingness to travel to Delhi indicates a 50 percent success for the BJP’s damage control efforts, with his political future hanging on the outcome of these high-stakes meetings.
