Authorities have started strictly enforcing the ban on two-wheelers and auto-rickshaws on the six-lane Kozhikode bypass stretching from Ramanattukara to Vengalam. National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) Project Director Prashant Dubey announced that the restriction, aimed at ensuring public safety, is being implemented in a phased manner across all entry points of the bypass.
Although signboards prohibiting these vehicles were installed when the six-lane bypass opened, the rules were widely ignored, with two-wheelers frequently using the third overtaking lane. Due to the increased risk of accidents with the onset of the monsoon, a high-level meeting led by City Police Deputy Commissioner Padam Singh decided to strictly enforce the ban.
In addition to the vehicle ban, authorities will take strict action against illegal parking on both the six-lane highway and service roads. Except in cases of vehicle breakdowns, illegally parked vehicles—including tanker lorries commonly parked at Thondayad, Kudilthode, and Paloramala—will be towed away using cranes with the assistance of the police.
