A young man from Kerala was brutally beaten to death by a mob in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district under the suspicion of being a thief. The tragic incident occurred in the Sangeejahan village of Kultali, where the victim was unable to communicate with the locals due to a language barrier, leading to a fatal misunderstanding. The police have registered a case and arrested five individuals, including two minors, in connection with the lynching.
According to senior police officials from the Baruipur subdivision, the youth had arrived in Kultali about two weeks ago along with some friends who previously worked in Kerala. On Tuesday morning, he went out alone to a local market and lost his way. Being unfamiliar with the area and unable to speak the local language, he could not explain his presence to the suspicious villagers. Rumors quickly spread that he was a thief or a child abductor, prompting the locals to demand his identification before tying him up and assaulting him.
Although some villagers alleged that the man had harassed a pregnant woman, the police stated that a detailed investigation is underway to verify all claims. Upon receiving information, a team from the Kultali police station rushed to the spot and shifted the victim to the Jaynagar Kultali Rural Hospital, where he was declared dead. The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, and efforts are ongoing to locate the friends who accompanied him. A video showing the brutal assault has also circulated widely on social media.
