The Kerala government has officially launched the historic ‘Priyadarshini’ scheme, offering free travel for women and transgender individuals on KSRTC ordinary buses across the state. Chief Minister VD Satheesan inaugurated the state-level launch of the initiative, which aims to empower women, enhance their financial security, and boost their self-reliance. The launch marks the fulfillment of a key election promise made to the public.
The inaugural journey took place from Thampanoor to Perumathura on a Pappanamcode depot bus, driven by KSRTC’s first female driver, Sheela from the Perumbavoor depot, with a female conductor on board. The scheme is currently active across 3,725 designated ordinary buses, which feature a distinct “Priyadarshini Free Travel” sticker. Passengers are advised to carefully check for these stickers before boarding, as some ordinary buses have recently been converted into City Fast services where the free travel benefit does not apply.
In response to protests from a men’s association regarding the women-only free travel, Chief Minister VD Satheesan humorously remarked that savings in a woman’s hands directly benefit the household, whereas men’s savings often find their way back to the government. He emphasized that the scheme is a mark of respect toward women and a step forward in building a supportive society. Meanwhile, Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala flagged off the service in Thrissur, with other ministers leading inaugurations across various districts.
